MOVE 2025 – ‘Lakyia Sindura Mangala Caranam’ By Michelle Jueney

Michelle Jueney is the Crown Jewel in my heart and my youngest daughter and though you may say I am bias, I leave to your good grace to appreciate her years of dedication, discipline and sacrifices to her passion for DANCE,  and in particular  the Odissi dance. 

My dearest Jueney wrote about the dance and I quote:

This dance was the dance I received from my mentor – the dance nuggets of what makes certain nuances different to others in how they execute certain steps given by Master Ramli, whereby the first tap of the foot has to be fast in the beginning after the walk for example. I choose to do dances I am most confident in and that I learned from the teachers in India and at Sutra Dance Theatre and remember.  This music is not the same as the one in Sutra Dance Theatre which is vibrant and vigorous. The music that was given to me, I had increased the speed what feels like 30 times faster than how I learned it, to suit the audience and to the temperament of the vigorous Guru Deba Prasad Das style. When played in its original extremely slower speed as it builds, it evokes extreme ‘rasa’ of a devotional and ‘bakti’ aspect that arouses the emotions even if one doesn’t understand the story of the dance.
