I reacted strongly, 2 articles ago, to most of Trump’s appointments. Now I’m seeing it somewhat differently. There was no path to the presidency for Trump without unbridled support for Zionism. But, Trump inherits a different world than in 2016, a world where Zionism will not be able to sustain Israeli dominance in the Middle East. Trump sees it, and being a man averse to war, he will call the shots, not his appointees or Netanyahu.
Is Trump conducting a master plan? He is not—instead he’s playing realpolitik, doing what he has to do to control outcome. Trump’s art of the deal, requires that he appear unpredictably dangerous. Most of his picks do that—repaying his debt to the Adelsons.
