How Do We Read The Holy Scriptures Of All Faiths?

I have been criticised by so many people who visited me over the past decades. My friends were aghast that I flagged the pages, marked with notations of the Holy Scriptures which I needed to read, read again for I am too stupid to comprehend the true meaning of the relevant passages on the first reading.
They would literally scream at me, “Matthias, how could you scribble on the Bible, the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads etc. They are Holy Books! You are an idiot!”
And I have been to houses of prominent persons who exhibited the scriptures they have collected, paid expensive prices (such as limited editions) and locked in special cupboards and or in pristine book shelves.
However, they never read the collected books at all. So, why buy them, if not to show off to their visitors?
